Why Is My AC Blowing Hot Air?

Your home is supposed to be a place where you can relax during the hottest moments of the summer, and your HVAC system plays a crucial role in making that respite possible. In most cases, when the system is well maintained, there’s no issue with transforming your home into a cool sanctuary. Sometimes, the air that gets blown from your vents is not as cool as you’d like it to be — in fact, it’s not cool at all!

Like any system with many moving parts, various things can cause your air conditioner to pump hot air into your home, including incorrect thermostat settings. Here are a few of the largest issues that can cause your AC system to work inefficiently:

Dirty Air Filters

You probably don’t connect the idea of a dirty air filter with your air conditioning unit failing to function. However, the dust that gets sucked into the air vents can end up inside the condenser when there isn’t a clean filter to catch it. Depending on how much dust gets into the system, your condenser might need to work twice as hard to cool the air, if it can do so at all.

Once enough dust piles up, all you’ll be feeling is the heated byproduct of an overworked condenser.

Frozen Elements

The area around your condenser can be sensitive to issues that may arise. One common problem you might experience is parts of your air conditioning unit freezing.

Counterintuitive though it may be, you can end up with warmer air being pumped into your home when your air conditioner freezes. This ends up being the case because the evaporator coils aren’t able to function when they’re covered in ice.

Refrigerant Leak

Frozen air conditioners can result from various things, one of them being a refrigerant leak.

The refrigerant in your HVAC system is a crucial component to ensuring that your home is cooled properly. When there’s a refrigerant leak, your home’s comfort is significantly reduced. You must contact an AC technician if you’re experiencing a leak because it usually means there’s a bigger and more insidious problem somewhere else in the system that’s causing it.
